PRIVACY POLICY
Bookworm Enterprises LLC, a Pennsylvania limited liability company (referred to throughout as “us,” “we,” or “our”), is the owner and operator of the www.readafun.com website, an educational reading and fundraising platform (collectively with all services within it, the “Service”). This Privacy Policy applies to the Service, any subdomains, any API integrations or widgets we offer, and any other websites or webpages we own or operate that include a link to this policy (together, the “Sites”).
This Privacy Policy does not apply to other websites that may be accessible from the Sites. Those websites may have data practices that differ materially from ours. All capitalized terms not defined in this Privacy Policy have the meaning given to them in our Terms of Service, which is available at www.readafun.com and incorporated here by reference.
This Privacy Policy explains the types of information we collect, how we collect it, how we use it, how we share and disclose it, how long we retain it, how we protect it, the choices and rights available to you, and our specific practices for children. Because many of our users are children, we provide additional protection for children and comply with the United States Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA), as described in Section 5.
When we update this Privacy Policy, we will post the date of the last revision at the top of this page, and we may notify Account Owners and Account Administrators of material changes. Your continued use of the Sites after a change takes effect means you accept the updated Privacy Policy.
1. Information We Collect
1.1. The information we collect depends on how you participate on the Sites, as a School, School Organization, Teacher, Supporter, Account Administrator, or as an Account Owner registering Students. Information that personally identifies you is referred to as “Personal Information,” and it may include the following categories:
1.1.1. Contact Data - such as name, mailing address, email address, username, account number, and password.
1.1.2. Student Data - for a Student, we collect only the limited information needed to run the school’s reading program and fundraiser, such as first name and last initial, grade, school, the Student’s reading log (books, minutes, and pages read), and the Student’s written responses to reading questions. We do not collect a Student’s full last name, and we do not display a Student’s grade together with the teacher’s name and full class section.
1.1.3. Activity Data - such as a Supporter’s donation amount and the date and time of the donation.
1.1.4. School and Fundraiser Data - for a School or School Organization, the information provided to set up a fundraiser, which may include a school image, the cause, the donation goal, the reading goal, reading totals, amount raised, and top readers (optional, and limited to first name and last initial).
1.2. We do not collect or store any credit-card, bank-account, or other financial information. All financial information relating to a donation is collected directly by a third-party payment processor through its own portal, subject to that processor’s terms and privacy policy, and separately from Student information. This is described further in Section 5.
2. How We Collect Information
2.1. We collect information in the following ways:
2.1.1. Directly from you - when you register an account, set up or participate in a Fundraiser, make a donation, or otherwise interact with the Sites.
2.1.2. From the School - when a School, School Organization, or Teacher creates a Tracking Account for a Student under the school’s authorization.
2.1.3. Automatically - when you use the Sites, we receive certain non-identifying usage information, and we use cookies. A cookie is data that our Site places in your browser, for example, so that a returning user does not need to re-enter a username and password. We do not use cookies to collect Personal Information without permission, and you can remove or turn off cookies in your browser.
2.2. We use Google Analytics to understand how the Sites are used and to prepare reports for internal use only. We do not share this information with third parties for their own purposes. We have disabled advertising and ad-personalization features in our analytics, and Student information is not used to serve or personalize advertising. You can opt out of Google Analytics using the Ads Settings or the Opt-Out Browser Add-on.
3. How We Use Information
3.1. We use Personal Information only to operate the Sites and provide the Service. This includes administering the Sites and your account, allowing you to use and participate in the Service, responding to your questions and requests, customizing your experience, sending receipts and activity or reading-progress updates, and contacting you about your account or changes to the Sites. We communicate with you only if you want us to.
3.2. We do not use Student information, or any Personal Information, for advertising or marketing. We do not use it to make you aware of other products or services, we do not sell it, and we do not use it for any other commercial purpose. Student information is used only to run the school’s reading program and fundraiser, and for no other commercial purpose.
4. How We Share and Disclose Information
4.1. Except as described in this Privacy Policy, we keep Personal Information private. We share it only in the following circumstances:
4.1.1. Service providers - we share Personal Information with providers that perform core services for us, such as hosting, data storage, and security. These providers may use the information only to perform services for us, and not for their own purposes.
4.1.2. Payment processor - donations are processed by a third-party payment processor. We do not have access to, and do not store, your credit-card or bank-account information; only the processor does, in its own portal and under its own terms. This payment flow is separate from Student information.
4.1.3. The School - a School or School Organization running a fundraiser has access to the information needed to administer that fundraiser, which may include a Supporter’s name, the name of the Student supported, any book recommendations, and the donation amount.
4.1.4. Public donation page - a Student’s public donation page shows only the Student’s first name and last initial, grade, school, the fundraising purpose, and the amount raised. Making a donation does not create a follower relationship and does not give a donor access to the Student’s reading log, written responses, comments, or any other Personal Information. A donor who gives through the public page receives only a receipt.
4.1.5. Approved supporters - a Student’s reading log, written responses, and any comments are available only to Supporters whom the Account Administrator has approved from their own account. No payment, and no possession of a shared link, gives this access. The Account Administrator may remove a Supporter’s access at any time. We do not disclose a Supporter’s Personal Information to a Student.
4.1.6. Legal and business transfers - we may disclose Personal Information as necessary to comply with a court order or other legal process, to protect our rights or property, to enforce our Terms of Service, or in connection with a sale, merger, consolidation, change of control, or transfer of substantial assets. If such a transfer occurs, the recipient will be bound by privacy commitments no less protective than this Privacy Policy.
4.2. After we disclose Personal Information to a School or School Organization, we cannot control how that party uses it, and we are not responsible for their acts or omissions. You should review their own privacy policies and data-usage practices. Information submitted through forms on the Service is transmitted within a session secured using encryption.
5. Children’s Privacy
5.1. We comply with COPPA and design the Service to protect children. Consent for the collection and use of a child’s information is obtained either through the School’s authorization for the school’s educational and fundraising purpose, or from the child’s parent or legal guardian before any fundraising begins, each as described below. A Student may have only a Tracking Account or an Authorized Account on the Service. If a child has submitted Personal Information to us without the required authorization, please contact us and we will promptly remove it.
5.2. School-authorized collection. A School, School Organization, or Teacher creates a Tracking Account for each Student under the school’s authorization, for the school’s educational and fundraising purpose. Information in a Tracking Account is used only by and for the benefit of the School, and for no commercial purpose. It is not disclosed to Supporters or other third parties, and is used solely by the School and School personnel for educational purposes.
5.3. Parental approval before fundraising. A Tracking Account cannot fundraise and does not enable a public donation page or any follower access. Before a Student’s account becomes an Authorized Account and can fundraise, the Student’s parent or legal guardian reviews the parent notice (provided on the login sheet and at the acknowledgment screen) and approves at the parent approval step. At that step, the parent or legal guardian (i) is notified of this Privacy Policy, (ii) consents to the collection and use of the Student’s information only to run the school’s fundraiser and for no other commercial purpose, and to approved Supporters seeing the Student’s page and reading activity, and (iii) authorizes the upgrade of the Tracking Account to an Authorized Account.
5.4. Supporter contact details. A Student may suggest a Supporter by first name or label only, such as “Grandma.” A Student cannot enter a Supporter’s email address, telephone number, or other contact details. The parent or legal guardian enters all Supporter contact details from their own account, so that we do not collect an adult’s Personal Information from a Student.
5.5. Withdrawing authorization. If a parent or legal guardian does not agree to the School’s authorization, or wishes to withdraw it, they may contact us at support@readafun.com. We will promptly remove the Student’s Personal Information and deactivate the associated account.
5.6. Parental review and other protections. Parents and legal guardians may review the Personal Information collected from their Student, and may refuse its further use or maintenance. We do not ask a child to share more information than is reasonably necessary to take part in the activity, and we maintain reasonable procedures to protect the confidentiality, security, and integrity of information collected from children.
6. Data Retention
6.1. We retain Personal Information only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purpose for which it was collected, to operate the Service, run the school’s reading program and fundraiser, and meet our legal obligations, after which we delete or de-identify it. Information collected from a child is retained only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purpose of the activity, or as otherwise required by law. Where a signed data privacy agreement with a School or district specifies a retention or deletion period, that period governs for the information covered by that agreement.
7. Security
7.1. We take reasonable steps to protect Personal Information from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. However, no internet or email transmission is ever fully secure or error-free, and email sent to or from the Sites may not be secure. Please take care in deciding what information you send us, particularly by email, and no method of transmission or storage can be guaranteed completely secure.
8. Your Rights and Choices
8.1. It is your choice whether to provide Personal Information and whether to use the Sites. You can visit the Sites without providing Personal Information, though some actions, such as creating a School, Supporter, or Account Administrator account, or making a donation, require it. Parents and legal guardians may review the Personal Information collected from their Student, refuse its further use or collection, request its deletion, and remove an approved Supporter’s access to their Student’s information at any time. To exercise these choices, or to ask any question about your information, contact us at support@readafun.com, and we will act on the request as required by law.
9. Third-Party Links and Social Sharing
9.1. The Sites may contain links to other websites, including children-oriented sites, which we do not control. You should review those sites’ own privacy notices, as this Privacy Policy does not cover them. The Sites may also let you share a Student’s public donation page on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and LinkedIn, for example, to tell family and friends about a Read-A-Thon fundraiser. Any such sharing is limited to the public donation page, which shows only the Student’s first name and last initial, grade, school, the fundraising purpose, and the amount raised, and never exposes the Student’s reading log, written responses, comments, or any information behind the parent approval gate.
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
10.1. We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will post the date of the last change at the top of this page, and material changes may also be communicated to Account Owners and Account Administrators. You agree that this method of notice is sufficient, and that you will check this Privacy Policy for updates. Where a signed data privacy agreement with a School or district applies to an account, that agreement governs to the extent its terms conflict with this Privacy Policy.
11. Contact Us
11.1. If you have any request or question about this Privacy Policy or your information, contact us at support@readafun.com, or at ReadaFun, P.O. Box 506, Ardmore, PA 19003.
